Car troubles this morning. A funny noise. A rattle. I took it into the dealer. They gave me a loaner. I'll have the car back in a few days. In the meantime, I'm driving a Toyota Camry. Imagine, a law firm partner in a Toyota Camry. Even just for a few days. It's shameful. There's not even leather seats.

I had to drive the Toyota to golf this afternoon. Which, despite being a day late, was still an enjoyable release, with a client, a colleague of his, and an associate here who I freed from the monotony of legal work with an invitation.

The client couldn't believe I was driving a Toyota Camry. Even just for a few days. He drove his Lexus. He has 3 other cars. He said if I'd asked he would have let me borrow one. But it's a bad idea to borrow cars from clients.

Comments:
Good grief - I cannot even take this as a joke with all that is going on in the world ... It could have been worse, it could have been a Geo.

Just wanted to say thanks for the blog and for keeping up with it. For those who wonder if this is fiction -- maybe so, but that doesn't make it any less accurate. I am a "Special Counsel" at BIGLAW -- so-called because I am too old to be an associate (10 years out) and I don't have any clients of my own yet. Most people don't grasp the utter banality that is the majority of big firm practice and think that if you don't "care" about your work and your clients you are failing to fulfill some sacred duty that comes with a law degree. I picked my area of speciality (commercial technology transactions) precisely because it is amoral. My work is about money -- who gets it and how much. If a deal craters, nobody goes to jail, nobody loses custody of their kids. I prefer big clients because the people I deal with are just doing their jobs too. I'm really good at what I do and get paid a lot of money to do it, but I leave it at the office. I'm not completely immune to qualms, however, I left a cushy in-house gig with a big defense contractor six months ago because I was doing deals involving technology that kills people. That bummed me out, so I left.

The intellectual caliber of your co-workers tends to be higher at a law firm than in other types of office jobs, so that can make water cooler conversations more interesting. However, since everyone is billing their time such conversations tend to be limited to .1 or .2 hours so you can get back to your desk. (Whatever happened to the luxury of .25 minimum billing increments?) I like my assistant but don't get too friendly since it can undercut my authority. I try to work with summers, but find it tedious at times.

My main advice would be to keep perspective -- avoid using the firm to meet your social needs. I've worked in firms where everyone socialized after work, hooked up when convenient and hung out together on the weekends. It's emotionally lazy and living in a fishbowl is unhealthy. And when you eventually burn out (which you will) and leave the firm, you are left with nothing. I don't recommend it.

HAHA! Great poem. Especially beating it like it owes you money.

I like a guy who talks about the intellectual caliber of coworkers in his quadruple posted comment. Made me smile inside.

All his other comments are absolutely true and this job is clearly soul-sucking and lucrative.

Sorry about the quadruple post. Kept getting an error message. By the way, I'm a girl-lawyer, rather than a guy-lawyer (not that it matters, I guess).

i cant take credit for coming up with the poem. it is a song from a skit on the chappelle's show on comedy central, but i thought it fit pretty well here. i had to change a few of the words to make it work, but that song was hilarious. the clip is on comedeycentral.com if you want to hear it.

1. Would a Mercedes dealership give out a Camry as a loaner? Would a Hyundai dealership, for that matter, give out a Camry? Does AL drive a Lexus?

2. Interesting contrast between AL, who doesn't apparently have even one spare car, and his client, who has a stable. Wonder what the power dynamic is like between these two men.

One of the smartest (and most successful attorneys) I know drives a little 10-year-old Toyota. Although he's a partner at a very prestigious law firm, he doesn’t give a rat’s ass what his clients or anyone else thinks about the car he drives (which still drives like a charm). When he retires at 65, he’ll be laughing at all you Mercedes-driving idiots while on a permanent vacation on an island where cars are not allowed.

Hi, great blog by the way - didn't think you'd mind me posting this anonymously - as you do allow anonymous posts ;-).

Anyone tried this Skype program yet for free telephone calls over the internet? A guy at work uses it all the time and because he signed all his friends and relatives up he saves a fortune on his calls. Might be worth a go.

Good luck with the blog

Hi matey

I'm sure it was this blog I was reading a while back where someone was looking for an SEO tool for driving more traffic and get more hits for their website.

Anyway, I was speaking to a techi guy at work who gets to know all the latest stuff and he uses the free Link Referral Program.

His website on promotion site tip web amongst other stuff has seen traffic explode since he started using the Link Referral Program - consequently his affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS his website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!

If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)

Hi, seeing as you accept anonymous blogging I thought I would send you this info about online gambling from a guy at work. His blog features roulette betting strategy and he has made a fortune from online gambling.

The Online Casino Startup Bonus

When choosing a trustworthy online casino there are many factors you need to consider. Just because one of the great number of online casinos existent today has impressive graphics, games and offers a wide diversity of bonuses, it doesnt mean its a fair and licensed one. Of course, such cases are rare, and, since today there are hundreds of reputable virtual casinos one can choose from, the most important criteria when deciding which one to play at is what they offer.

The first bonus you can get when you first open an account at a casino is the sign up bonus most casinos offer, an encouraging bonus of at least $25, but it may often be higher than $500. Some casinos even match your first deposit, meaning they double it, for free.

Many casinos also offer hundreds of dollars worth bonuses for new players and, if you're the one who brings other friends to the casino, things are even better than that. Most casinos offer a refer a friend bonus and, the more friends you have, the more fortunate you will get. For each friend you refer to the casino, you will get up to $1000, for each friend that they refer, you'll earn up to $300 and, furthermore, for each person that your friend's friends refer, you will earn up to $100. Once you are confident that particular casino is a reliable one, bring as many of your friends as you can to the casino and you'll have all the reasons to enjoy their games. The only thing you need to pay attention to afterwards is to handle the money wisely and not risk it all in a single bet, however confident you may be.

And most casinos give you an alternative to this. They offer you the chance to practice for free at first, and they also give you money to do that, so, it's practically free and you have nothing to lose. When you find the right casino you'll know it from the first time you play there. From then on, they will remind you how important you are to them by giving you special bonuses every month. These bonuses are somewhere around $100 and even higher and they reward you for being a loyal customer. These casinos also offer the so called comp points that accumulate throughout the course of the games you play and at certain points they turn into real money and, depending how long you have been playing at that casino, you may win lots of money.

The most important bonuses casinos offer are the jackpots and prizes you can win at their games. Casinos reward players with millions of dollars each day for their gaming skills. Tournaments and regular casino games are most profitable for gamblers. Only one progressive jackpot, for one single game of slots, for instance, can be of over $ 2 million. And it's only a matter of seconds and a bit of luck to win it.

Most casinos don't need a special occasion to give bonuses. They offer bonuses for the players third and fourth deposits, for being loyal to the casino, or just for being at a table at a certain time. So, it’s only a matter of finding the right casino and from there on, bonuses will keep coming to you. The only problem is that if you don't have a proper money management you won't treasure what you win, it will go away as easily as it came. We may all want those bonuses, but do we know what to do with them and how much of it we should risk in our next bet?

A guy at work recommends the following Casino Gaming Sites, (the trick is to sign up to each and get your startup bonuses) once you have played each one for a while you will get to know which one suits your style of play and which is therefore the most profitable one for you.

I'm interested in investing in the real estate market in the US and am looking for some really cheap repossession properties in Beverley Hills, Santa Barbara, Denver, Colorado, San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, Iowa, Hawaii, British Columbia, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New England, Minnesota, Miami, Florida, California, New York, Washington, Dallas, Texas, Chicago and Los Angeles. I've found a couple of really good sites - Bargain network which has some really cheap homes and Texas Ranches for sale - ranches in Texas plus both sites have beachfront villas and cars that have been repossessed and are really cheap!! Just wondering if there are any more sites like this.

Thanks for this.

John
